School Programs for 2006-2007

Enhance your students' learning experiences through quality Yampatika programs!

We offer a variety of programs, from field-based experiences to classroom visits. Browse through the listings below to find a program that fits your needs. You can also see an overview of available programs at program listings. We can create your learning experience, or you can have our naturalist enhance an activity you have already planned. We provide Colorado Content Standards based activities that mesh well with your curriculum.

Our school program offerings are made available through grants from

Field Programs

Nothing will excite your students' passion for learning like the outdoor classroom! Yampatika has received grants this school season from the Colorado Division of Wildlife Teaching Environmental Science Naturally (TENS) program, and the BLM. We are happy to work with teachers and schools in seeking additional grants to meet your specific needs. Our programs are intended to enhance classroom teaching, not to replace it. Let us help you add another dimension to your classroom.

TENS programs are available to Routt County schools, and have a curriculum designed with activities for grades 2-5 at specific field sites. We are happy to work with teachers to provide programs that fit their needs. Please check with your school librarian to obtain a TENS curriculum manual. Look over the great activities and decide what fits well with your curriculum, call Yampatika to set up a date for a naturalist and a site (if appropriate), call the site to make a reservation, then book your bus (make sure they know it is a TENS program so your bus costs will be covered). Then enjoy a great day of learning from the natural world!

BLM funding is available to Moffat County schools. Sites and subjects are wide open, so call Yampatika to discuss what you are looking for and we can tailor our teaching experience accordingly. Be aware that BLM funding does not cover bus costs for Moffat County schools.

If you have booked a winter program, Yampatika offers snowshoes for your students. Now we can really go exploring!

For those programs that do not fit into the TENS or BLM funding, Yampatika provides our school services for $40 per hour. Often this can be funded from money already set aside in your school's budget.

Classroom Programs

Yampatika secured funding from the Steamboat Ski and Resort Corporation for our Discovery Box program for the 06-07 school year. See the discussion of discovery boxes below. The program includes a one hour classroom program using the Discovery Box, which will be left for your use for two weeks, after which you simply bring it back to Yampatika.

Please see the attached listing of all of our great Discovery Box topics from Botany to Archaeology to Fire. Most of these kits have curricula that are Colorado Content Standards based, and are organized by grade level. They are jam-packed with puppets, posters, videos, books, and all the things that make hands-on learning a great teaching opportunity.

Or maybe you would like to have Count Batula or Dr. Who come and visit your class to talk about bats or owls. The sky is the limit on topics for classroom visits, and your students will have a great time learning from our instructors. Our classroom visits have a fee of $40 per hour to cover our costs but, again, this can often be covered by your school's budget. As the writer of the postcard at left wrote, the program was Super Duper Greait!

Discovery Boxes: a portable box of experiences!

A Discovery Box brings a certain theme (Botany, Birds, Mining, etc.) right into your classroom with puppets, posters, books, videos, and much more. Most Boxes also have a Colorado Content Standards based curriculum. Please see the attached box descriptions. Find one that complements what you are studying and call or email yampatika to set up a two weeek period when you will use it in your classroom or in the field.

Special Offer!! Yampatika has received a grant from Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. Employee Environment Fund to have a naturalist deliver the discovery box to your school and provide a one-hour program from the box for your students. The box will be left for the two week period for your use.
